What Ipnumbers Does

What IP Numbers Mean

How internet numbering works: address anatomy, the registries that assign numbers, IPv4 exhaustion, and the move to IPv6.

🔢

Address Anatomy

What each part of 203.0.113.7 encodes, and how routers read it differently than you do.

🏛️

Who Assigns Numbers

The chain from global coordinator to regional registries to your ISP to your router.

🧮

Binary to Dotted Decimal

The conversion that makes masks and prefixes obvious instead of memorized.

🌍

IPv4 Exhaustion

How four billion addresses ran out, and the markets and workarounds that followed.

🚀

IPv6 Numbering

Reading the colon-and-hex format, and what 340 undecillion addresses make possible.

🔎

Lookup Guides

Tracing any number to its registry record, owner, and routing announcement.

How Ipnumbers Works

From signup to value in 3 steps

1

Read the number

Break an address into its network and host parts and see what each encodes.

2

Trace its origin

Follow the assignment chain from global pool to registry to the network announcing it.

3

Understand the future

See why numbering moved to IPv6 and what changes as the old pool fades.

Frequently Asked

Who decides which IP numbers I get?

Address space flows from IANA to five regional registries, then to ISPs and organizations, and finally to your devices — usually assigned automatically by your router or carrier.

Did the internet really run out of IPv4 addresses?

The free pools at the registries are essentially exhausted. Addresses now change hands on transfer markets, while NAT and IPv6 keep the internet growing anyway.

Why do IPv6 addresses look so strange?

They are 128 bits written in hexadecimal groups separated by colons. The length is the point — enough numbers that every device can have its own, globally.
